Sermon: Romans 5:6-11

(6) For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. (7) For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. (8) But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (9) Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. (10) For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. (11) And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

Opening Prayer:

Hymn:…………………TLH 245: God Loved the World So that He Gave

Liturgy: …………………………………………………………………….WS, p. 22 ff.

P: God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.

C:If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C:If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

P: Let us pray:

C: Almighty God, merciful Father, we are sinful by nature, and have sinned against You in our thoughts, words, and actions. But we are sorry for our transgressions and pray You, of Your boundless mercy, to be gracious and merciful to us. Forgive us for Jesus’ sake, renew us by Your Spirit, and lead us in the way everlasting. Amen.

P: Jesus Christ is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. We are forgiven. With boldness and confidence we may approach the throne to find grace to help in time of need. In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

First Reading: ………………………………………………….Genesis 28:10-17

Jacob’s dream of the ladder going to heaven.

Gradual:

P: Oh, come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus,

C: The author and finisher of our faith,

P Who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, scorning the shame,

C: And sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

P: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son,

C: That whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Second Reading:……………………………………………. Matthew 8:31-38

Jesus has taken up His cross in order to die for us. Those who follow Him should expect to bear their own crosses as well. This is the price of dedication.

Confession of Faith: …………………………………The Apostolic Creed

C:I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.

Hymn: ……………………………………………………WS 777: Amazing Grace

1. Amazing grace – how sweet the sound – That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, Was blind but now I see.

2. The Lord has promised good to me; His Word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures.

3. Through many dangers, toils, and snares I have already come; ‘Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home.

4. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise Than when we’d first begun.
